The European Commission has released the outcome of its first Innovation Fund call to improve battery production in the EU. Six innovative projects have been chosen to be given a combined total of €852 million of grants under the #IF24Battery call with the aim of upscaling the production of electric vehicle battery cells.
Funded by proceeds from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), these investments will form a key part of making the EU climate neutral and increasing industrial competitiveness.
- – To be operational in 2030, the shortlisted projects will:
- – Make the EU value chain for batteries more resilient
- – Make transport and industry decarbonisation possible
- – Create high-quality jobs
- – Prevent more than 91 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions during their first decade
This is a major step in the clean energy transition of the EU and demonstrates the strategic value of the battery industry for Europe’s green industrial future.
